5 things to make your child’s first dentist visit a success

Every house has a toddler who has tiny teeth or is expecting some soon. Even if you don’t have one in your house there are high chances that you interact with one on a daily basis maybe as a teacher or a care taker. You would know the struggle of making the child do something he hates and visiting is one of those tasks especially if it is his first appointment with the dentist. This article talks about the five things you could do to make your task easier.

  1. What is the correct time to take them to the dentist: it is advisable that you take your kid to the dentist as soon as his/her first tooth erupts which will be around their first birthday. Baby teeth are susceptible to more bacteria hence it is important that one takes precaution from a smaller age. If you feel your child has passed that age and still needs to do his first visit it is never too late.
  2. Lets talk teeth: it’s never too late to introduce your child to tooth brushes and toothpastes and their importance. Children love to learn new things and explore hence if this is made interesting for them they will learn faster and will also remember. You could also use a number of child friendly books to make the task easier.
  3. Practice makes perfect: brushing your teeth is one of the daily grooming chores which is important and you should inhibit this in your child by making him practice it very often. You could make teeth brushing a group activity to increase their interest however some may end up being very stubborn.
  4. Have a positive attitude: your attitude as a parent really matters. Children are relaxed and happy when those teaching them or around have a positive and happy attitude. It is very important that you do not pressurize your child a lot and rather talk about it with them in an excited tone. You can also spend time reinforcing what the dentist will do in a positive way.
  5. Choose a dentist you trust: It is imperative you choose a dentist which will be polite and cooperative with your child. It is even better if the dentist has some kid friendly activities and is flexible with appointments in case you child tends to behave strangely at the dentist.
