Choosing a mouth rinse which is right for you

Ranging from anti plague, anti gingivitis or alcohol free, you will find a number of these products in your supermarket aisles. They promise to protect your teeth and gums while freshening your breath. How do you know which is telling you the truth? How do you know whether you even need one or brushing and flossing is enough? While some of these mouth washes are available over the counter others might need a prescription. Here are some things you need to know when shopping for a mouth rinse:
- Fluoride containing mouth washes: fluoride not only helps to prevent tooth decay but also strengthen the enamel. Although most people get enough fluoride from their toothpaste there are still some exceptions. People with extreme dryness in their mouth or cavities should use such a mouthwash. Extreme dryness can cause bacteria while bacteria cause teeth decay. You could ask your dentist to know if your toothpaste has enough fluoride otherwise this is an excellent way to supplement the shortage in your mouth.
- To freshen your breath: while most mouthwashes do help you freshen your breath they do not offer any long term dental health benefits. Cosmetic rinses reduce most mouth odors and remove bacteria for a short period of time. While you may have minty breath for some time they don’t really improve your oral health
- Anti plaque rinses: to use an anti plaque mouth wash is a good idea for adults with brushing and flossing. This is because although we do brush and floss we do not always do a very good job with them and hence using these mouth wash can give a boost to your original dental care habits and kill potential germs. You should make sure these are certified by an independent scientific body. These mouthwashes work very differently from the breath freshening ones and their main aim is to remove bacteria which can cause gum diseases. You can ask your dentist to help you according to your conditions; some might need a stronger one.
While this is true we need to remember that mouthwashes cannot replace the basic brushing and flossing. This should be done regularly regardless of the mouthwash you are using. You should not get lazy once you start using a mouth rinse. A recent survey found that most of these mouthwash producers made false claims because these weren’t effective enough for removing plaque.
