Periodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions that affect the gums and other supporting structures of the teeth, such as the bone and ligaments.

Periodontists are trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat gum disease and other conditions that affect the supporting structures of the teeth. Some of the procedures and treatments that periodontists perform include:

  • Scaling and root planning: a deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque and tartar buildup from below the gumline, helping to treat and prevent gum disease.

  • Gum grafting: a procedure that involves taking tissue from one area of the mouth and using it to cover areas where the gum tissue has receded, helping to prevent further recession and improve the appearance of the gums. Over time, the grafted tissue will integrate with the existing gum tissue, helping to prevent further recession and improve the appearance of the gums.

  • Crown lengthening: a procedure that involves removing gum tissue to expose more of the tooth structure, often in preparation for a dental restoration such as a crown or bridge.

  • Dental implant placement: a procedure that involves placing a small metal post into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth, which can help to prevent further bone loss and preserve the integrity of the surrounding teeth.

In addition to these procedures, periodontists also work with patients to develop personalized oral hygiene plans to help prevent gum disease and maintain healthy gums and teeth. They may also work closely with other dental specialists, such as prosthodontist and orthodontists, to develop comprehensive treatment plans for patients with complex dental needs.
